Vernissage Ink*

“Is this art or can it go away?” Neither part of the question is easy to answer when it comes to tattoos. What is body jewelry for some, causes others to turn up their noses; some see tattoos as works of art, for others they are nothing more than scribbles on the skin. What makes artistic observation even more difficult is the painting surface. Human skin becomes a canvas and the wearer is therefore… well, what actually? Artist, curator – or even the museum itself?

We want to take a risk and bring an (artistic) practice into the museum that has hardly received any attention so far. Because that’s exactly what it’s all about: questioning artistic conventions, initiating a discussion about the understanding of art and looking at the pigments under the skin through a completely new lens than we are used to in everyday life.

The discourse is complemented by works by the American outsider artist Anthony Dominguez, who also wore his art on his body – in the form of painted patches that he sewed onto his clothes. The Austrian Fritz Hortig also frequently works with textiles in his art. His brightly painted shirts are street art you can touch – and above all wear.
