Feel free, do something!
Feel free, do something! – the life motto of artist Kurt J. Haas was also taken to heart by Manuela Hitz around a year ago. Since 2018, the artistic director and curator of the Musée Visionnaire has acted as Kurt J. Haas’ work administrator. Over the years, the desire developed to give something back to the 88-year-old exceptional artist from Zurich that would not only make his art visible, but also tangible. The idea eventually became a book. On 123 pages, “Feel free, do something” provides insights into Kurt J. Haas’ life and also reveals the various drawing styles of the artist, which he has pursued, discarded and revisited from the beginning of his career in the 1970s to the present day. “It is also intended to be a kind of exhibition in book format, a mobile exhibition that stays with you, that you can leaf through, immerse yourself in and get to know the world of Kurt Haas through,” says Manuela Hitz, describing the publication’s curatorial approach. “Feel free, do something” not only reflects Haas’ range – miniatures in postage stamp format are just as much a part of his work as huge canvases – it also highlights the artist’s remarkable career. Because Kurt J. Haas is anything but an unknown. As early as 1982, he was represented at Art Basel by Galerie HILT, followed by exhibitions in renowned galleries and museums around the world. Finally, in 2015, his drawings were part of the exhibition “Einfach tierisch” at the Musée Visionnaire. Manuela Hitz was able to get the well-known Swiss Art Brut collector Max Ammann to write the foreword to the retrospective, while another text in the book was penned by art connoisseur and Art Brut luminary Edward Gómez, who is a member of the advisory board of the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne and co-editor of the cultural magazine brutjournal and whose texts can be read in the world’s most important magazines on Outsider Art. “Feel free, do something” is available for CHF 28 from the Musée Visionnaire store.
